Sunshine children experienced a wonderful science evening when they were a part of CSIR-IGIB's open day.
CSIR opened it's doors to Sunshiners when they invited and sponsored a trip to their premises for the children to experience real science as a part of their open day.
All the Sunshine children, who are part of SEP, EACH and our enthusiastic volunteers, were taken by the Sunshine members to witness and participate in the real life science experiments.
The children could actually separate their own DNA and observe it in a test tube. They had the pleasure of understanding the power of photoneurons and it's commercial applications. How to use earthworms to convert the kitchen waste into vermicompost in just seven days, three dimensional printer which is now being used to print and transplant organs were the areas where the children just wouldn't move from. Laboratory where the zebra fishes are being studied was an area of great interest for the children. The children tried to comprehend the enormity of the study when they were told that the fishes were mutated to understand different gene functions. Casper - a mutated zebrafish was shown amid gasps by the children. The usefulness of the fruit-flies to understand the mutation effects in humans gave them food for thought beyond the daily rigours of life. The children had a field day taking apart the parts of the computers, understanding their functions and trying to put them back together. Older children also saw the protein lab and came out determined to take up Biology in their senior year.
It is an effort to coordinate this trip, to ensure that children get to experience the latest in science, to show them the whole world of opportunities available to them, but it so worth all the effort and more when we see the wondering eyes dawn with a possibility that they can be a part of this wonderful literate world.
Our energies are recharged and our hopes soar when we see the photographs. Hope yours will too.
