International Day of Elders - 2018

6/10/2018

Comments

01 Oct is celebrated as International Day of Elders and the same was celebrated with full enthusiasm by Sunshine Society  under the guidance of the Meghdootam Senior citizens Forum. The energetic participation by the senior citizens made us relize that the happening age is 60+ now. The celebrations started at 0930 hrs at Alok Vihar II, Sector 50 and continued till late evening at Meghdootam Park, Sector 50.
Sunshine Society, an NGO for Children and senior citizens, held a free medical camp for Senior Citizens in collaboration with Sahyog Foundation of Oxigen. Doctor S.K. Puri, a doctor and a member of the senior citizen forum provided his services free of cost to all the participants of the medical camp.
About 80 senior citizens came and availed the facility of the camp which had various checkups lined up like BP measurement and general physician advice followed by Sugar testing and full eye and dental checkups. The dietician really helped senior citizens in planning their meals and diets according to their requirements.
Later, in the evening, a cultural programme was organized at Meghdootam Park. Wherein senior citizens of F block societies like Alok Vihar I & II, Windsor Greens, Amarpali Eden, Overseas Apartments, Mahagun Maestro, Shubhkamna, etc participated.
Led by Amanpreet Kaur of Mahagun Maestro, the senior citizens performed brilliantly to Bollywood old & New songs mix up. A puppet dance was also performed by the same group.
Parvinder Singh, member Sunshine Society and Yugal regaled the audience with the ice breakers and a happiness collage team game..
It was a show that brought out the Senior Citizens out of their cocoons and shed all inhibitions. They felt happy performing and rehearsing. It was indeed a nice sight seeing  elderly ladies getting dressed for the performance.
The energy, enthusiasm and the spirit of coming together, the practice schedule, the preparations, the dress selection and stitching and interacting with each other was so visible amongst the participants that we realized the importance of  sharing tasks and working towards a cause together.
Amanpreet as the director of the show, was so effortless and now all the participants are her friends. A salute to her dedication and commitment.
Of course, the act of encouraging our loved ones’ happiness and social interaction should happen throughout the year, not just on Senior Citizens Day. There’s always a time to make them feel special, and there are a lot of different ways to reap the benefits of connecting with seniors, from simple day-to-day check-ins to intergenerational family activities.
The day was successfully  celebrated with this aim.

International elder’s day – an excuse for us to witness the senior wonder!

1/10/2017

October 1, 2017, Sunshine Society along with Meghdootam Senior Citizens Welfare Forum celebrated the International elders day at Meghdootham Park, Sector 50, Noida. The venue was the beautiful amphitheater surrounded with lush green trees and wonderful supporting audience.
Aman, with her gang of girls and boys presented a spectacular fashion show and a medley of dance on Bollywood songs.
What everyone witnessed, was the result of days of practice, of memorizing the steps, of coordinating the steps with each other, of excitement of wearing dresses that were never worn before, of matching the jewelry with the dresses, of getting the right hats, right pagdi, right kurta payjama, right sunglasses… of feeling the excitement of yesteryears…
Sunshine Society is enriched to have witnessed and be a part of all of this. It was so wonderful to hear that it was a first for so many participants to step on the stage to wear dresses and to perform.
The program started with the stuti, followed by fashion show and dance. The program culminated with the team game and tambola.
Will not take away the awe of the evening by writing about it. For those who missed the action and for those who want to relive the action, please watch the videos and experience the joy. Browse through the photos to feel the emotions…

On 7th May 2016, a super senior citizen, 84 years old Mr. Vivian Judd resident of Overseas apartment sector 50 went missing after taking a lift to metro station probably for going to Delhi. Mr. Vivian Judd is a progressive Alzheimer’s patient. Unfortunately, he did not carry his wallet or any other document of identification. We got to know about his disappearance in the evening about 6:00 pm and immediately the following action was take:
  1. We went to Metro station with his photograph and asked the CISF to flash his photo with description to all metro station.
  2. We went to the Police station requested them to flash his photo and messages to all police stations and posts in Noida(a missing person’s report is only filed after 24 hours)
  3. Police report filed on May 8
  4. Released advertisements in Dainik Jagran and Navbharat times on May 9(they need a copy of the FIR and 8 May was a Sunday and the offices closed
  5. Whatsapp message circulated in all groups for spread of message
  6. A systematic physical search by the relatives to Delhi Bus stands (ISBT & Anand Vihar), markets of Noida sectors 37, 29, 50, 49, 34, 35, 41, 20, 19, 18, Vasundhara, New Ashok Nagar, Mayur Vihar, Sanjay Jheel, Pragati Maidan, ITO.
  7. 40000 poster + pamphlets by way of newspaper inserts and physical distribution and pasting
  8. Citi cable flash for a week
  9. Facebook page created #findvivian https://www.facebook.com/locatevivian/?pnref=story and circulated
  10. Systematic searches in churches, ashrams, old age homes, places where free food is available, hospitals.
There have been many people who have joined in this search for Vivian Judd but without any result.
When we think of an 84 year old super senior citizen lost in this huge crowd we shudder to think what he must be facing. Since he has Alzheimer’s, there is no way he can remember his address. So it is not up to him to come home but for us to find him.
This is a very humble appeal to all and specially to the police to help find him. Let us know ways and things that we can do to look for him. Though we’re losing faith but have not given up on the police’s capability to search for a super senior citizen.
Once again a humble request for help.

In this heat of the month of June, this trip to Botanix nature resort was such a welcome break. Thank you to all the senior citizens who were a part of this trip and were such an enthusiastic bunch. We are now motivated to organise many more of such trips. The volunteers made this trip so worthwhile. We all enjoyed and also bonded with the senior citizens. The smiling photos are a record of all things gone right.
